Presents

2nd International Conference on Drylands, 2016

MAIN THEME:

Agricultural Diversification: A Panacea to Food Insecurity in the Drylands

BACKGROUND:

Notwithstanding the 21st century agricultural development investments in the sub-Saharan Africa, different countries in the sub-region are still food insecure. The level of the food insecurity, arguably, is rising especially with the on-going population expansion, land degradation, changing climate, inconsistent government policies and global financial crises. Agricultural policies and programmes pursued by African countries often with support from international organizations including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are yet to transform agriculture and to increase productivity. Thus, the region continues to be bedeviled with rising food prices, malnutrition, conflicts, unemployment and
abject poverty. Much hope still lie in research, development and adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies as well as the financing and building of capacities of all stakeholders in agriculture. All these need to be achieved by realistic and pragmatic policies and policy implementation framework especially in the drylands of Africa. These were the key focus of the First International Conference on Drylands held in December 2014. At the First International Conference which was organized by the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University Kano, Nigeria, understanding of the dynamics of climate change and its influence on food security was the key objective. It was evident from the proceedings of the conference that sub-Saharan Africa needs to pursue research and investments in climate-smart agriculture, crops and livestock improvement, improved soil-water management and capacity development for farmers that will result in increased productivity and enhanced livelihoods of its inhabitants. In pursuing the above, agricultural diversification remains a key strategy. In recent decades, policy and programmes by governments in ensuring food security have tended to ignore this vital strategy despite the numerous researches that are being conducted in the sub-region. This is the central focus of the 2nd International Conference.

The Second International Conference on Drylands is also organized by the CDAto take place in December 2016. It aims at bringing together scientists, farmers, policy makers, experts in NGOs and CBOs as well as other stakeholders to examine how agricultural diversification will support sub-Saharan Africa and other dryland regions of the world to attain sustained food security.

OBJECTIVES:

To share and disseminate the knowledge of Science and Technology related to dryland agriculture and related fields with emphasis on climate change and natural resources management, crops and cropping systems, range and livestock management, livelihoods and natural resource economics and mechanization in dryland environments.
