The University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID School of Postgraduate Studies has rolled out the strategic plans of the school for 2017-2022.

THE SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI 2017-2022 STRATEGIC PLAN

INTRODUCTION
The School of Postgraduate Studies University of Maiduguri was established in the 1981/1982 session. The first programmes to be started by the School were, M.Ed in Education and M.Sc in Geography. A total of eight students enrolled into the two programmes as pioneer students. From this humble beginnings in 1981, the School has grown in leaps and bounds in the last three decades. The School now has about 2000 students within the University and more through our Affiliated Colleges.


The School of Postgraduate Studies is responsible for coordinating post graduate studies in the University.

The School acts on behalf of Senate through its Board on a number of issues. The Board consists of the Dean as the Chairman, the Deputy Deans, Provost and Deans of faculties, Directors of Academic Units, Faculty representatives as well as representatives of the Registrar, Bursar and Librarian.

We currently offer Postgraduate programmes (PGD, Masters and Doctoral degrees) in various fields as listed in our website page. www.unimaid.edu.ng/pg
 
VISION
The School of Postgraduate Studies shall be among the leading top ten graduate schools in Nigeria in terms of programme quality, choice, opportunities, as well as breath and depth of offerings. We seek to achieve this by being catalysts for regional and national development and by leveraging resources, nationally and internationally.

MISSION
The School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Maiduguri aim to provide comprehensive and quality postgraduate education. We shall expand access and emphasize ethical conduct and student success. We shall facilitate teaching, learning and research by providing conducive environment for Faculty and graduate students.

CORE VALUES
We shall emphasize the following as our core values.
1. Integrity: We shall be guided by ethical conduct in our teaching, research and interactions with our stakeholders and Patners. We shall discharge our responsibilities with utmost level of commitment to integrity.

2. Service: We pledge to diligently serve all our stakeholders i.e. Teachers, Students, other members of the University Community, Partners etc in order to facilitate the achievement of the Mission of the School.

3. Internationalization/Diversity: We seek to diversity our student population and encourage them to bring perspectives to various issues and foster friendship. We shall forge patnership with sister institutions abroad in order to open opportunities for our staff and students.

4. Excellence: We shall imbibe the culture of excellence. This requires a commitment to constant improvement of our processes to ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of what we do.

STRATEGIC GOALS AND TACTICS

Following a SWOT analysis of the current situation of the School of Postgraduate Studies, the Management came up with three priority strategic goals to move the School to the next level. Each of the Strategic Goals consist of several tactical plans. Action Plans will be distilled from these, to guide implementation by the School of Postgraduate.

Strategic Goal No 1: Improve Quality and Integrity in Postgraduate Studies Tactical plan
a. Make our library more user friendly for staff and students.
b. Provide additional resources especially on our E-library platform.
c. Create a repository of abstracts of graduate theses and dissertations
d. Appoint a Coordinator of ETT for the school to take full charge of Examination matters so as to improve the integrity of the examination processes.
e. Introduce antiplagiarism software for testing of dissertations and theses
f. To enable Postgraduate students latch onto relevant lectures from other Universities abroad through video conference facilities.
g. Mount training workshops for students on various aspects of research and, or introduce elective courses that can help students in their Postgraduate Studies.
h. To work with teaching staff to improve quality of teaching and learning.
i. Encourage teachers to upload their lectures on our portal
j. Explore the possibility of some of our Postgraduate Student visiting other Universities to take courses and carry out research (split programmes)
k. Organise grant writing workshops for Postgraduate staff to enable them leverage grants to support more Postgraduate students.

Strategic Goal No 2: Improve Access to Postgraduate Education Tactical plan
a. Create Courses on the University Distance Learning platform
b. Encourage affiliation with Colleges of Education and Polytechnics in the North- East (NE) to mount Postgraduate Diploma programmes.
c. To create the position of the Coordinator of Distance Learning and Affiliated Institutions to coordinate such activities.
d. Create new programmes within the University in order to double the current intake by 2022. We aim to be the flagship faculty (largest) in the University as soon as feasible.
e. Make the current programmes more sustainable
f. Encourage departments to increase intake into existing programmes.
g. To introduce flexible admission system so that students can start their
studies during the first or second semester
h. Devise ways and means of encouraging women to enroll and succeed in graduate education.
i. Establish model classrooms with state of the art facilities for teaching Postgraduate students.
J. Encourage Teachers to produce Books of readings for use by Postgraduate Students.
k. Procure a new more spacious facilities with classrooms, spacious library, seminar rooms, examination rooms/halls, research laboratories, offices and storage space.

Strategic Goal No 3: Improve efficiency in the management of Postgraduate Education in the University.
Tactical plan
 
a. Introduce a robust portal for admission, registration, management of students
records, computation of results and as a means of interaction with ourstudents.
b. Digitise old records to facilitate information retrieval.
c. Take measures reduce the time spent at Board Meetings without compromising the integrity of the quality assurance process involved.
d. Improve graduation rate by facilitating teaching, learning etc and by being student centred.
e. Encourage staff and students to use ICT as much as possible as well as train students in the its use for their studies.
f. Standardize submission format for documents being submitted to Postgraduate Board to facilitate automation.
g. Improve power supply to the school by using alternative and environmental friendly power sources.
h. Procure a more spacious, temporary library and other facilities.
i. Provide up to date information in our website for use by our stakeholders and patners.
j. Raise students fees by at least 20% to make available, additional resources for improving the teaching and learning environment.
k. Co-opt more members to our Board to improve quality assuarance.
